Hex All Metal Lock Nut (DIN 980V)

DIN 980V All-Metal Prevailing Torque Hex Lock Nuts

What are DIN 980V Lock Nuts?

DIN 980V (Type V) specifies a single-piece, all-metal hexagon lock nut of the prevailing torque type. Commonly known as Stover Lock Nuts, Crimped Lock Nuts, Top Lock Nuts, or Oval Lock Nuts, they are distinguished by their conical top with chamfered corners. The locking action is achieved through a permanent, controlled deformation of the top threads, which creates increased friction and a radial clamping force against the bolt threads. This design offers a reliable, reusable, and temperature-resistant locking solution.

Key Features & Operating Principle

One-Piece All-Metal Construction: Provides resistance to higher temperatures and chemical exposure compared to lock nuts with non-metallic inserts (e.g., nylon).

Prevailing Torque via Thread Deformation: The locking mechanism is created by mechanically compressing the top portion of the nut, forming a band of distorted threads. When installed, these deformed threads exert a continuous gripping force on the mating bolt.

One-Way Installation: These nuts are designed to be installed in one orientation only: top side up. Installing them upside down will not provide the intended locking effect.

Reusability: Can typically be reused several times while maintaining a significant portion of their prevailing torque, though performance may diminish with repeated use.

ISO Equivalent Standard

The functionally equivalent international standard is ISO 7042 for prevailing torque type all-metal hex nuts.

Material Selection Guide

The material choice determines the nut's strength and environmental resistance.

Ideal Application

Notes

Steel, Zinc-Plated Cost-effective with basic corrosion protection. Suitable for most general industrial applications. Dry or intermittently moist indoor environments where high temperature resistance is needed. The most common and economical choice. The zinc plating provides limited corrosion resistance.
Stainless Steel A2 (18-8) Good corrosion resistance, protects against rust from water and mild chemicals. Outdoor applications, damp environments, and settings requiring improved corrosion resistance over plated steel. Offers a strong balance of durability and value for corrosive environments.
Stainless Steel A4 (316) Excellent corrosion resistance, withstands harsh weather, salt water, and many chemicals. Highly corrosive environments such as marine, chemical processing, and coastal applications. The premium choice for maximum service life in aggressive conditions.

General Specifications & Installation Notes

Drive: Standard wrench or socket on the hexagonal flats.

Installation Torque: The prevailing torque (the resistance felt during initial threading) is part of the nut's function. Final tightening torque should be applied to the free-running section of the threads below the deformed zone.

Compatibility: Ensure compatibility with the bolt material (strength grade and coating) to prevent galvanic corrosion and thread galling, especially with stainless steel on stainless steel connections.
